It's a natural pain relief in your labour. When gripped in your hands, a comb can help hit acupuncture points in your hands, helping your body forget about the contractions. It also plays a part in the gate control pain theory. Nerve endings in your hand send messages to the brain to distract it away from the waves of contractions.
